Estate, Gift & Trust Returns

Taking on the role of executor or administrator of an estate after the death of a loved one can seem overwhelming.  Our estate experts can help you understand how the tax law applies to your situation and provide peace of mind that affairs have been professionally managed.

The estate may need to file a tax return that reports the income earned after the date of death. This tax information is reported on Form 1041, Income Tax Return for Estates and Trusts.

Some estates are also required to file a tax return that lists all the assets owned by the individual at date of death. This information is reported on Form Form 706, Estate and Generation-Skipping Transfer Tax Return. As of 2022, the federal estate tax exemption is $12.06 million.

Similar to estates, income earned by a Trust is reported on Form 1041.  In some cases, the trust pays any tax that is due.  In other cases, the tax is paid by the beneficiary.

Gifts exceeding annual IRS exclusion limits are required to be reported to the IRS on Form 709, United States Gift and Generation-Skipping Transfer Tax return.  The annual exclusion for gifting purposes is $16,000 for 2022.

Let our estate, trust and gift tax specialists help you evaluate your unique situation to determine which filings are needed.
